Hi, I’m Sarah Shaw, Global Portfolio Manager and Chief Investment Officer at 4D Global Infrastructure, a boutique funds management firm established in 2015 in partnership with Bennelong Funds Management.

So, why invest in infrastructure?
Infrastructure provides the basic services essential for communities to function, and for economies to prosper and grow. It’s known as a defensive asset class, with generally lower volatility of earnings and higher yields than the broader equity markets.
However, at 4D we believe infrastructure is much more than a defensive asset allocation.
An ageing existing infrastructure inventory, a growing global population, and thematics such as evolving global decarbonisation goals and the growth of the middle class, especially in emerging economies, demand a significant amount of infrastructure spending.
At the same time, infrastructure’s unique characteristics offer investors defensive earnings and economic diversity, allowing it to be well positioned no matter what cyclical events the future throws at us, be they economic, political or environmental.
With governments unable to wholly fund the infrastructure need, there’s a significant opportunity for private investors to tap into this growth story. We can think of no more compelling or enduring global investment thematic for the coming 50 years.
